Callum Wells
Paid entry-level roles in the environmental sector are hard to come by, so the opportunity to take this one and learn so much so quickly was the main draw.
This was reinforced by the people I had already met who worked for Arbtech while I was a subcontractor. They showcased a culture that’s still evident among the ecology team over a year later – friendly, knowledgeable and supportive.
It’s a culture I’m enjoying being a part of.
The other ecologists!
All of the colleagues I’ve worked with directly have been so supportive and fun from day one.
Being paired with mentors who genuinely want the best for me and go out of their way to help me develop as an ecologist is definitely the standout part of working here.
It doesn’t hurt that we get to work so flexibly either – it allows work to fit around life, not the other way around.
Adventure, sports, or both combined!
Shockingly, as an ecologist, I love getting outdoors and out of the city when possible.
I’ve been on several camping trips this year, alongside surfing, cycling or any other sports I can get involved in.
Over the summer, while working evenings on bat surveys, I’d often take the first part of the morning for a cold swim and to enjoy the sunshine.
The most important part of all that is (cringe) the friends I get to do it with! And when we can’t escape the city, we’ll find some form of live music to enjoy.
Say yes to things.
Try new experiences, explore everything, and take some risks.
If it doesn’t work out, hopefully it’s a good story and a better lesson learned.
More importantly, live outwardly and be grateful.
By that, I mean serve others before yourself. That’s how you really get the most out of life.
We had our first proper social just last week! It was a pretty good start too.
It followed a classic activity – dinner – night out format. Making the most of being the London social, we went to Dishoom for dinner, which was incredible, before heading to Hackney Wick for the night.
Lowlight: the weather was ridiculous – we all got drenched.
Highlight: getting to know the team better (and Finn’s dancing!).
I’d love to visit several countries in Central or Southern Africa for the music, the food and – most of all – to go on safari and turn my Sir David Attenborough dreams into reality.
For now though, I want my next trip to be to the Danube Delta in Romania to see what a similar climate to the UK can achieve in terms of abundant nature.
Throw in some kayaking and wild camping, pelicans and wolves (maybe not all at the same time), and that sounds like a pretty dreamy trip!
I want to be leading teams that make large-scale environmental change.
Where we are now regarding the biodiversity and climate crisis is terrifying, and I want to be contributing to and supporting teams of dedicated people to make substantial change as quickly as possible.
To not see a world in environmental or social decline.
My goal is to play as big a part as possible in changing that – that’s my biggest aim in life, both professionally and personally.
