Trystan Figuères
I joined the 2024 internship fresh out of university, as I was eager to get a foot in the ecology door and it just so happened to be the coolest door possible.
Arbtech’s internship ad emphasised their willingness to train newbies and provide invaluable early career development. My professional growth is apparent and ongoing, and I largely attribute that to Arbtech’s unique and incredible culture. There is an amazing amount of freedom and trust to complete the work in a way that works for me while maintaining access to helpful and friendly support when needed.
By the end of the internship, I didn’t want to leave.
The people are really nice. It actually seemed like a requirement in the hiring process because literally everyone is kind, and everyone is really easy to talk to, both professionally and for a casual chat.
I also love the free Spotify membership!
I love spending time with my mates; we love going to a gig or a good cinema trip, often followed by a trip to the pub.
I also enjoy amateur nature/landscape photography, and I love being able to incorporate scenic detours when travelling to/from survey sites.
Be kind to yourself and others. And always try to assume the best in people.
If you believe in your head that ‘it’ was done with good intentions, you will feel better about it – even if it wasn’t (but it usually was).
My favourite social was an intern/mentor meet-up and trip around IKEA. A lot of us got a little desk plant.
I’m also massively excited for the infamous Christmas party!
I’m hoping to visit friends in Iceland and New Zealand in the near future! During these trips, it will be fun to see cool sights and learn more about indigenous Māori culture.
Working in ecology – hopefully with Arbtech – but definitely in ecology!
I’ll have some protected species licences and make even more direct impacts that protect local biodiversity.
Ideally, this will be whilst living in a little Welsh cottage by a lake with my cat, Boudica
I’ve really enjoyed working with local bat groups, so I would love to eventually get to a professional level where I can help organise community events and training.
I also want to learn Welsh, French and British Sign Language (BSL).
Trystan joined Arbtech in October 2024.
