Kit Bullard
Finding a job after university felt daunting, so when I found the internship program offered by Arbtech, it was great to see their attitude that ‘anyone who’s willing to work hard is welcome, regardless of qualifications or experience’.
That focus on potential and effort made Arbtech feel like a supportive place to start my career and really develop.
The company benefits were also a big factor in my decision. Flexible working hours and no timesheets create a real sense of trust, and the support with subscriptions – including contributions towards a gym membership – is a great help.
Having access to private healthcare and strong pension contributions (particularly as you progress) also makes a difference, especially during times when money can feel tight with the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.
The company ethos has definitely carried through into my role as a graduate ecologist.
Arbtech recognises and rewards hard work, and genuinely supports people in developing their careers regardless of their role or experience level.
For me, having access to such a large team of experienced ecologists is invaluable while I’m building my career.
There’s expertise across practically every aspect of ecology, so no matter how niche the question is, there’s always someone knowledgeable, approachable and willing to help.
When I’m not at Arbtech, I’m usually running or cycling. I really enjoy the structure and discipline it brings to my life, and it’s a big part of how I maintain my mental wellbeing.
I also love exploring local areas. Bristol is surrounded by some amazing wild landscapes, so getting out for a hike is one of my favourite ways to see them.
And I’m pretty sociable, so I’m always up for meeting friends and heading to a music gig.
My biggest tip is to focus on consistency.
Small and disciplined habits built over time are what create real progress, whether that’s in work, health, or personal goals.
I also think looking after your mental wellbeing is key, because feeling balanced and motivated can help you achieve so much more.
The best social I’ve been on at Arbtech was our conference and Christmas party – ArbCon.
Because we work remotely, we don’t often get the chance to spend time with everyone across the company, so ArbCon was a great opportunity to catch up and meet people I wouldn’t normally cross paths with.
It was brilliant for team morale and really reminded me how strong the culture is at Arbtech.
I’d love to travel to the Ethiopian Highlands next to see geladas in the wild.
I’ve always had a big interest in primatology, so seeing them in their natural habitat and in such an incredible landscape would be an unforgettable experience.
Other than that, I’d love to see more of the UK. I think some people tend to overlook it when they think about travelling, but some of my best trips and memories have been here, and I’d really like to make many more.
I’m not entirely sure what the next five years will hold for me – whether I continue to grow within consultancy or decide to pursue a route into animal behaviour research.
Either way, I know my time at Arbtech is giving me a wealth of knowledge and a strong set of transferable skills that will help me thrive in whatever I choose next. I’m truly grateful to be a part of the team.
One of my main goals is to run a marathon in the near future.
I’m currently working towards it, building up my mileage steadily and staying consistent week to week.
It’s a challenge I’m really excited about, and I’m looking forward to seeing how far I can push myself.
