Tilly Smith
After graduating from university and being unsure of my next steps, I became curious about the world of consultancy.
Following a quick YouTube search, I stumbled across Arbtech’s excellent series of ‘A Day in the Life of an Ecologist’ videos, hosted by Dr James Fielding.
This led me to apply for Arbtech’s seasonal sub-contractor role for bat emergence surveys, and the next season, I completed the internship.
Arbtech is the first company I have come across that really understands the gap between graduating and a career in ecology.
Providing thorough hands-on training straight away, Arbtech has helped launch me into a career in ecological consultancy.
Flexible hours and remote working allow me to get on with tasks whenever and wherever.
Having a hybrid role gives me the opportunity to get out and about.
Whether it’s on a site visit or a training day, every day is different.
The team at Arbtech are all super approachable and friendly; everyone helps each other.
I spend a lot of my time having fun with friends, jet-setting, going to the gym and running.
With any more spare time, you will probably find me going on nature walks with my dad.
Always take the scenic route!
Going for dinner and then bowling post-intern training was lots of fun!
I have enjoyed getting to know fellow Arbtechers and going on various smaller socials in my area of the UK.
It’s really refreshing to get together outside of work and have nerdy nature conversations!
I love spending time in the mountains. It is definitely my happy place.
Skiing is a keen hobby of mine, and I’d like to spend more time in the winter/spring in the Alps.
Arbtech offers a generous annual leave allocation, which will make all of this possible.
Hopefully, by then, I will have vastly improved my flora and fauna ID skills.
Everyone at Arbtech has an individual and unique plethora of ecological knowledge. I have already learnt so much from my time here at Arbtech.
I’m already looking forward to continuing to develop my skills.
I’d like to have my own small herb/sensory garden.
I’d also like to get back into painting.
Tilly joined Arbtech in October 2025.
